Christmas Trees:

Aspen/Basalt:         Details at Aspen/Basalt Christmas Tree Recycling.   After Jan 18, take to Pitkin Solid Waste Center or Caca Loco.
Glenwood Springs:  Residential Christmas tree recycling at the parking area south of the Rodeo Arena on Airport Road. Please remove all ornaments, tinsel, tree stands, tree bags and any other metal. After being collected, the trees will be transported to the South Canyon site of Cacaloco and combined with other organic material to be resold as compost.
The collection site is open through the end of January. Those missing that date may take trees to the South Canyon site directly.

Leftover Prescription Drugs:

  • Don't flush unused drugs down the toilet, unless they're one of a handful that expressly advises that on the prescription label--they may poison our water.
  • Crush or dissolve leftover medicine in a little water. Then mix with a yucky substance — cat litter, coffee grounds, even dog waste — in a sealed plastic bag or other unmarked container, and put in the trash.
  • Glass: Glass bottles and jars can be recycled curbside and at all recycling centers--no dishes, conventional light bulbs, or window glass. Alpine Bank will recycle compact fluorescent bulbs.

Used athletic shoes: Can be recycled into playgrounds and tracks. One outfit that's been taking used running shoes and participating in the national ReUse-a-Shoe campaign is Carbondale's Independence Run & Hike, 995 Cowen Drive #101.

Biodegradables: (also known as Compostables) A few miles west of Glenwood Springs on Interstate 70, accessible through the South Canyon Landfill, there's an EPA-monitored composting site that mixes scrap wood, scrap paper, biosolids and wastewater to create various soil amendments for our local clay soil. Check out the Glenwood Recycling Center and Caca Loco.

Food for thought: "According to "The State of Garbage in America" for 2003, western states had the highest regional recycling rate (38 percent). ...Elizabeth Royte in Garbage Land
